Smith wrote before the dominance of the capitalist mode of production that came on the Industrial Revolution. He did not see, as Marx did, how the division of labor had serious implications for labor, the best of which was the distance between the laborer as well as the object he produced. To Marx, the alienation of labor was a single on the most effective sins of society, doing jobs essentially forced labor.

Like Smith and Marx, Weber thought inside the rational firm of society and social justice. All three, particularly Marx and Weber, were concerned with the entire society and sympathetic on the person who is acknowledged as inexorably tied to society.
