Transnational Commodities As giant multi-million dollar corporations expand across seas and their commodities are dispersed amongst different cultures, the view of globalization brings up the possibility of having one similar culture worldwide. As external goods are introduced into new cultures, the new culture will ask the idea of the good yet change it with some of their influences in launch to have it correspond their origins. In his article, Transnational Commodities as Local Cultural Icons: Barbie Dolls in Mexico, taken from the Journal of fashionable Culture, author J. Paige MacDougall emphasizes on this idea with using the Mattel product as his example of this phenomenon. MacDougall claims that the globalization of transnational commodities is causing some cultures round the world to become alike. He argues that there are tenuous cultures out there resisting the change and not choosing to conform. His project is to institute that cultural influences can change a mass-produced commodity so that it embraces their beliefs. Commodities can eventually be reformed into a proper example and or icon to another culture. He refers to the term creolization to better understand this whole idea. In his article, he uses the influences of the Yucatan region of Mexico on the Barbie doll to back his claims.
MacDougall focuses on how the Barbie has changed in traditional Mayan culture. His journal entry shows that Barbie has been reformulated by Mexican consumers to represent local identity rather than emulating the meanings and values she was attributed by Mattel(257). The limited values embraced in the Mexican version of these dolls are the traditional clothing, a dance originating from the area called the jarana and the traditional ceremony which mark a young girls crossover from adolescence to adulthood called the quincenera.
