I think Bennett’s view of old period is very pessimistic. It presents a life of
loneliness and becoming a sort of prisoner in your own home with no one to
keep you comp all. In the first paragraph, it says, “your dusting days argon over
Doris”. This shows she straight has lost her choice. The whole film is Doris
talk to herself or old photos and reminiscing about how life used to be.
Whereas now all she has is a carer who comes in and treats her like a electric razor
Doris loves cleaning, she links everything to cleanliness. However, sadly in
her poor conditions she finds hard to oblige the cleanliness that she is mad
about. Instead, a cleaner called Zulema from the social services comes to her
mob every week to clean for her.
Doris physical health is declining and she asshole no longer care for herself and
needs home help. Which she does not believe this she does not see herself
as someone who is not capable of looking after her home. Therefore believes
Zulema to be naught more so a “hindrance”, as she cannot do as good of a
job as Doris does which is why Doris hurts herself trying to dust her living
room.
Once she has hurt her branching Doris is very lonely and down as in the
soliloquy she says “ I never get a bona fide caller” screening that zulema is
the only person that Doris sees and she doesn’t seem to get any pleasure out
of these visits. Zulema always try’s to twine Doris to move to Stafford
domiciliate which is an old peoples home however Doris despises the approximation of
Stafford house as she quotes ‘’I don’t lack to be stuck with a lot of old
lasses’.’ she thinks that the people of Stafford house stink of pee and are not
as hygienic as Doris is.
