This figurative language, or simile, represents how the Germans and their invasions were a big deal to the people of this town. It is represented by the commission the news about them spread so fast and was right away the talk of the town.

The officers were billeted in private homes, even in Jewish homes. Their attitude toward their hosts was contrasted but polite.
