When I arrived at college I was surprised at all the general education classes that were required in pasture to graduate. All I knew was that I wanted to be a nurse; I didnt know why I needed to take history, art, music or anything else that had nothing to do with my intended major. The answers I have came with up with are that a bighearted arts college answers you think, teaches you how to checker, allows you to see things as a whole, it enhances your percolateing and faith and last but not least it is real very unique.
Liberal arts like I mentioned, teaches me how to think. I gain more ways of viewing and registering things from contrasting view accuses. Its like exercising a muscle. Once it learns an exercise, it volition get used to the process. Each subject has their witness put to throw into the big picture. Its all about trying to learn good organizing habits. Another thing that comes to my mind when I say it teaches me how to think is, it teaches me to think for myself. I develop my own opinions, attitudes and beliefs. I dont have to conform to my families or my friends beliefs. College is a place where you can find yourself.
Next, a liberal arts education teaches me how to learn. College isnt just a voltaic pile of facts that Im supposed to remember. Its how I learn them.
The more I learn, the more I can learn. Its like a foundation and I build on it, slowly adding to it. Material Ive learned up to this point in my life will help me. As George Herbert said, mountain are best taught by something they are familiar with, something they already understand, to explain something unfamiliar.
Another one on the list is it helps me understand things as a whole. Life itself is not divided into majors. I think you need knowledge of material outside your electron orbit of interest to really succeed. This ties in with what I mentioned before, but things you learn and build a foundation on will help you make analogies.
