Rarely do we see a handsome, well-mannered man with his white knight and shinning armour. Usually we find a dishonest, self-absorbed “player”. The correct example of this type of man is Jake, the main character In the story. Gilb’s gives us the first image of Jake by describing his aspiration car:
He needed an FM radio in something better then a ‘58 Buick he drove. It would obtain crushed velvet interior with electric controls for the L.A. summer, a good warm heater and defroster for the winter drives at the beach, a cruise control for those longer trips, mellow speakers front and sustain of course, windows that hum closed, snuffing out that nasty exterior noise of freeways. The concomitant was that he’d probably have to change his totally style. Exotic colognes, plush, dark nightclubs, maitais and daiquiris, necklaced ladies in satin gowns, misty and sexy equal in a tequila ad.
This descriptive passage proves that Jake had these thoughts and chose these specific features in hopes to impress women. We further understand the character of Jake once he rear-ends a woman’s car, his womanizing character truly shinning as he uses this opportunity to pick her up. The fact that that his first and for the first time concern is the status of his car’s paint traffic and that he then proceeds with his pick-up lines is a clear reflectivity of his “player” personality. This is displayed through the imagery used by Gilb in paragraph 5:
