When an incumbent takes a job at any given virtue enforcement department he or she is lookingd with difficult decisions. These decisions may include the get over of un ethical behavior performed by other officers. Of course it is important to report any wrong doing the he or she witnesses; however thither is always the fear of retaliation or chastised by familiar officers. According to Roberta Ann Johnson who wrote Whistleblowing and the police loyalty is exacted with a code of value that requires officers not to snitch on, rat out, or turn in other officers. A former police chief refers to it as a veil of silence surrounding police agencies, and it has been more than commonly referred to as the Blue Wall (2005).
In this report card the measures that should be taken if indeed this scenario presented itself, also the professional implications of account the unethical behavior. What the liability issues involved with not reporting the officer will be discussed, and what supervisory issues does this situation present to focussing and leadership will be discussed as well.
Lastly wherefore ethics are so important in the law enforcement profession will be discussed.
When an officer is faced with this cause of situation he or she is held to a higher beat ethically as well as morally. According to Gillmartin and Harris who authored the expression Law Enforcement Ethics; The Continuum of Compromise Officers live and work in a constantly changing and dynamically social context in which they are exposed to a myriad of ethical conflicts. When either unprepared or unaware, officers are more probable to go with the flow than they would be if they were adequately prepared to face potentially ethical risks (1998).
